Micki is a writer. She is also a Badass Superhero Caregiver. She is part of the 1%. When she’s at work, she dresses like a school bus driver. But at home, she drops her backpack at the door, takes off her yellow vest, and turns into a superhero. No one ever suspects because she’s so good at pretending to be like everyone else. If she tells someone what she does outside of her day job, most are shocked. Sometimes she shares her story and explains how she became a Badass Superhero Caregiver.

In the prime of her life, at the height of romance, her boyfriend, Frank, was in a devastating accident and broke his neck. He was diagnosed with permanent paralysis from the chest down. Almost everyone encouraged Micki to leave him; friends, family, coworkers, hospital staff, and even Frank’s family.  But worst of all, as if to seal their fate, the hospital psychologist warned Frank, “99% of relationships, even marriage, end after an injury like this.”

Against all odds, despite the advice to run away, Micki stayed by Frank’s side. There are a lot of reasons she made that decision. Maybe it was true love, maybe it was the hope of Frank’s recovery, or maybe it was fear of losing the man with whom she had fallen deeply in love. Whatever it was, she stayed.

We all deal with adversity in life, whether it’s a great loss or a small annoyance, and we all handle tragedy in different ways. Micki has been Frank’s full-time caregiver for over thirty-two years, and she has done so with great courage and steadfast devotion. And Frank, despite being a prisoner of a paralyzed body, has remained the kindest, most loving person Micki has ever met.

People that meet Micki and hear her story describe her as an angel or amazing. She doesn’t agree, but she does realize that she has defied 99% of the odds against her. That makes her a Badass Superhero Caregiver.
